Pathogen capture and removal

Nature-inspired materials that trap and remove biothreat agents, pathogens and toxins without chemical disinfectants.

Materials that behave like a cell surface

Aquila has developed glycosylated materials with multivalent, three-dimensional ligand displays that imitate the glycocalyx on cell membranes. In biomedical settings, these materials could capture pathogens much as a host cell surface does.

Trapping biothreats without chemicals

Aquila has used these approaches to build several capture and removal products, aiming to contain biothreat agents, other infectious agents and biotoxins without traditional chemical disinfectants.

Cell-surface glycans act as binding sites for viral and bacterial lectins.
A glycan-coated surface captures pathogens selectively through receptor binding.

Cotton-based polymers decorated with biological recognition ligands have been shown to decontaminate hard surfaces and human skin.
